If you think you’ve been getting the silent treatment on news over Canada-US-Mexico trade negotiations, you&#8217;re really not alone.
Canada has essentially been shut out of talks that have already begun between the US and Mexico, and that&#8217;s because the US has insisted that Canada basically give up all of the countermeasures that Canada has imposed on the US before we sit down and talk to the US about the things that they&#8217;ve done in terms of new trade barriers with Canada.
The reality is that the American negotiating style will likely mean that in the next few months, we&#8217;ll continue to hear some harsh news from the American side over Canada&#8217;s negotiating posture.
And it may well look like the deal is going to fall apart.
But remember, we can take solace from the fact that we saw the same thing during Trump&#8217;s first term.
Ultimately, a deal was reached between the three parties, and we&#8217;re still hopeful that in the next few months, reasonable heads will sit down at the negotiating table.
We&#8217;ll be able to reduce some of the trade barriers, not all that have been imposed on Canada, and that this deal won&#8217;t completely fall apart.
And remember, there&#8217;s always the possibility that the parties agree simply to keep on talking into 2027.
